When it’s time to relocate your office.

Having a place to call home for your business is a critical aspect of running an organization, and sometimes relocating your office space is necessary. Maybe you’re a small business that just relocated from your kitchen table to a small office building and now it’s time to pull the trigger on something even larger. Or maybe you inherited an office space in a changing neighborhood and you would like your business to be more convenient for the next generation of employees.

Despite the fact that office space is one of those features that few businesses can live without, most aren’t particularly eager to tack on additional square footage or invest in an office relocation. However, studies show that a positive work environment leads to more productive workers—which can make the investment well worth it. But sometimes we all need that extra push.

Signs it’s time to relocate your office

Location: Especially in an urban environment, location makes a difference. Whether that means accessibility to the train stations, subway stops or access to easy parking, employees are attracted to offices that are easily accessed. If you have employees who have resigned because of the commute or are having a hard time attracting talent due to location, it might be time to start hunting for space that’s a little more convenient.

Space is cramped: If people are sharing desks or the conference room has recently been transformed to a small working area with additional desk seating, start thinking about finding larger space. While having an office full of competent employees is a great problem to have, those individuals won’t be happy for long if they are cramped into loud and uncomfortable space. Time to find something more functional for all.

Expense is too high: It’s not uncommon for an office lease to include an escalation provision that raises the rent each year. But sometimes the rent will jump during a lease renewal, and the expense just isn’t worth it anymore. If you can’t comfortably foot the bill, it’s time to look into an office relocation.

Branding: Some businesses want nothing more than to enhance their brand identity with hip new digs. If it’s time to rebrand your office space, starting over in a fresh new space can make all the difference. Not only will new employees be thrilled about the changes, but especially for a well-established business, you can’t go wrong with a facelift.
