How to make your office feel like home

With most people spending more than 40 hours per week at work, it’s important to create a space that feels comfortable and inviting, rather than stiff and stuffy. “People tend to be more productive in space where the surroundings feel warm and familiar,” says Rightsize Senior Account Manager Shannon Filo. The trick to creating a comfortable work environment is to combine fabrics, textures and colors in a way that is professional.

Furniture. Comfort is key when it comes to furnishing an office. Choose furniture that coordinates, from workstations to conference areas and private offices. But what truly makes an office feel like home is the accent pieces, like plush chairs in the waiting area and stools in the break room. Don’t be afraid to combine comfortable options with those that are more practical. Relic Furniture Gallery has a fantastic selection of accent pieces, such as the Kimball Wingback Armchair.

Whether that means using your brand colors to paint the walls or hanging company signage in the entryway, the added color makes a big improvement to how the space looks and feels. “Don’t be afraid to use residential elements in a commercial space,” says Filo. Try grasscloth wallpaper to add texture or artwork to create a room focal point.

Flooring: In commercial workspaces, there are endless options for flooring to help make the space feel like home. To add a heavily stylized, industrial finish, poured concrete can have a very modern effect. Hardwood floors add instant warmth to a space, especially in lofted buildings. We love using carpet tiles for an additional level of comfort and a pop of color. For those who want to incorporate an artistic element, try one of our Relic area rugs, like the Persian Indo Laristan Rug.

Natural Light. Perhaps the most vital element to creating a comfortable workplace is the presence of natural light. Position desks and meeting rooms in a place where employees can get a glimpse of the great outdoors. For interior spaces, use table lamps to enhance the light, while adding a decorative element.
