Ergonomics in the workplace is not just a trend in office furniture – it has the power to impact employee productivity, happiness in the workplace and the health of workers. Besides employee retention, this could negatively impact your bottom line. Which is a total pain. An improper workspace may result in the following physical ailments: Headaches or eye straining Neck and back pain Carpel tunnel syndrome Not only that, but sitting in a desk for multiple hours a week can limit life expectancy by 15 years. But the truth is that office ergonomics can help you be more comfortable at work. It can help lower stress, make you more productive and prevent long-term injuries. But if you don’t have the money to throw down for a Herman Miller Aeron Chair, follow some other DIY tips that can help make your workspace more ergonomic.

Office Chair – Make sure that your chair has a comfortable cushion, arm rests and adjustable seat and backrest height. The armrests should be low enough that shoulders are relaxed and elbows bend at about 90 degrees. Your chair height should be adjusted so that your thighs are parallel to the ground with feet flat on the floor. Also, try to find a chair with lumbar support for your lower back.

Desk Set Up – Place your mouse and keyboard as close together as possible. Adjust your monitor so that it’s about an arms length away from your seat to prevent eyestrain. Also, consider a standing desk if that’s an option.

Posture – Poor posture can lead to several musculoskeletal disorders, which include injuries to the lower back, right shoulder and left lower limbs. Be sure to sit up straight so promote circulation and reduce muscle pain.

Lighting – A poorly lit office space can have the same negative impact as an uncomfortable chair. Make sure that your work area is well lit to prevent eye strain. If possible, invest in a large monitor to make it easier to read the computer screen.

Take breaks – Staying in the same position all day long can negatively impact blood flow and cause muscle pain. Make sure to stand up, stretch and walk around the office at least every hour.
